What are the advantages and disadvantages of a belt drive.

Everything you need to know about a belt-driven eBike.

A Lindtbergh eBike comes in many different models and these models all have different versions. One of the choices is: Am I going for a chain or belt drive? The belt drive is definitely gaining popularity and that is because this form of drive is extremely durable and maintenance-free.

What is a belt drive?

A belt drive is a drive that uses a plastic belt instead of a 'traditional' chain. The belt consists of a polymer, a specific type of plastic, and is also reinforced with carbon fibres. The use of these materials ensures that these belts are water-repellent and extremely strong. To be able to opt for a belt drive, it is necessary that there is no lateral play, for example, a belt cannot be used in combination with a derailleur gear. You will therefore always find a gear in the rear hub or bottom bracket with a belt drive. Like everything, the use of a belt drive has its advantages and disadvantages, read on for all our tips.

What are the benefits of a belt drive e-bike?
A belt-driven bicycle is practically maintenance-free. The wear of a belt is less than that of a chain. This is partly due to the gears that are in the hub or bottom bracket. When gears are changed, this happens in the hub. This keeps the belt on the same line, so there is less resistance on the belt. The belt is also a lot quieter than a regular chain. In addition, a belt remains a lot cleaner and cannot rust. No oil is needed to lubricate the belt either. Very nice for the clothes.

What are the disadvantages of a belt drive bicycle?
A belt drive requires a specific or modified frame. This is because there must always be an open space in the frame to be able to (dis)assemble the belt. A belt consists of one piece and cannot be disconnected like a chain. Another disadvantage is that an internal hub gear must always be chosen with a belt, which means that you have a limited choice in the number of gears than when you opt for a derailleur gear. The bicycles with belt drive are also more expensive, but you will save these costs on maintenance later on. In the unlikely event that you have to purchase a new belt drive, it is much more expensive than a normal chain.

Maintenance of the belt drive.
As mentioned earlier, a belt is relatively low-maintenance. A belt can last up to 10,000-15,000 km, while a chain sometimes needs to be replaced at 2,000-3,000 km. A belt does not need to be lubricated and because it cannot stretch, re-tensioning is not necessary. The belt can be easily rinsed with water. If the belt creaks or starts to squeak due to dry or dusty conditions, you can use silicone spray to solve this. For a longer lifespan, you can turn the CDX sprocket and belt after, for example, 7,500 kilometers. Be careful never to kink the belt. In that case, the carbon fibers will break and your belt drive will be worthless.
